BT went to the vet today

bengalensis Sep 25, 2003 07:11 PM

After 3 days of lethargy, I carted Hewey, my BT off to the vets. His last meals consisted of a few hardboiled eggs(a once a month treat) a big rat, and 4 mice. Since then hes just been laying around not wanting to even budge. So this morning off he went. They did xrays, put him on anitbiotics and fluids, and took blood. Unfortunately this office doesnt have the quipment for anylizing the blood panel on site, so it had to be sent off. Yay More waiting. The xrays came back normal, but hes stuck there overnight, and I have to resist calling every hour 'till the results come back in the morning.
Wish him luck you guys, and Ill let you all know how it turns out.

Michelle

I'd be going nuts if I were you. Hope it's no big deal and just a fluke. Good thing you got hewey checked out. Best of luck!

Hi Michelle,
Hopefully it is somethign simple, like a bloated bowel-fart = gas....an often enough occurence after a hearty meal. Also, your V.albigularis may be beginning his shut down mode for the (african) summer months?? They get this way naturally, in the wild and in captivity...

Good Luck,
mbayless

How's it going? I have a quick question for you. What are the African seasons in terms of comparison to our seasons. I am not sure but our winter means their summer or? I know my buddy in Australia has different seasons too from what he was saying last time we spoke....

Thanks

Oh yeah, bengalensis, I wish you luck with the BT at the vet. Hopefully things will work themselves out.

Pretty much everything looked good...good bone density, good calcium/ phosphorus ratio, no organ failure. The only thing that got their attention was blood cell counts. Pointed to toxicity in the cells. Hmmmm? After discussing husbandry, nothing could be pinpointed to the cause, and until we can get a fecal to look at, Ill simply be administering like 3 different anitibiotics.
So again, more waiting...

Find a vet that can do a stomach flush or you can use a q tip to get a fecal sample.
Good luck

Hello,

Ask the vet to consider, infections. While prescribing antibiotics suggests that, the problem most likely is immune system related, not a direct relationship with an injury.

Read, part 3, immune system is developed at the upper end of their temperature ranges.

The immune system can and is comprimised buy both stress and improper temps(another kind of stress), good luck and speedy recovering. F

I really do appreciate it.
I do think that Frank is on to something. Especially something he mentioned to me about a week ago when I posted that my BT seems unhappy with his enclosure. That should have been a HUGE red flag to me. Ive got some serious re-thinking to do about how Im going to have this animal housed in order for him to thrive.

Thanks again, and all the very best!

Im instructed to administer:
FORTAZ- .1-.3 cc injected every 72 hours
FLAGYL- .9 cc orally every 24 hours
SODIUM CLORIDE- 60 cc injected every 24 hours

He doesnt seem any perkier since he came home. He did sniff around a bit, and then proceded to DRAG himself over to a rock to bask. The damn cats were all trying to get a look at him though, so I covered the front of his enclosure so he wont be bothered by them.
The vet still wants a fecal, so when I get something, Ill run that down to the office for testing.

I took the day off from school so I could monitor him. I just hope the stress doesnt get the best of me as well.
