Really bad shed

mightybd Oct 03, 2010 06:14 PM

I moved into a new aprtment a few weeks ago.
During moving my plastic 'top' I had on one of my cages got damaged and it took me about 2 weeks to replace it.
I think the cage must not have been humid enough, as my poor snake has the WORST case of stuck shed I have ever seen.
It has 2 humid hide boxes, and big water dish, it has not used either since I have moved, prefering to hide under a 'tree'.

The head had a clean shed, but retained from the neck down, probably 90% stuck!
How can I help my poor snake, I put a damp towel in the cage hoping he will slither in and out of it helping remove the skin, but so far over the last 4 days I can not see an improvement.

The plastic is replaced and the cage sits at 50-60% humidity, with the 2 humid hides too which are close to 90%.

Give him a nice warm soak a few times a day.

I wouldn't leave the damp paper towel in there, as it will cool off really fast, and have no use in the cage. Since it will cool off, the snake wont want to get on it.

Same goes with the soakings, make sure its not too warm, luke warm if you will, and just let him chill in there for a little bit. Id say 5-15 Minutes.

Just make sure the water doesn't get too cold, because it will cool off fast!

Best of luck.

If you replaced the plastic, then it should be fine.

I always have a spray bottle around in my snake room.
When I see an animal in shed, even if the temperature and humidity is good, I spray them.
It can only help.

In the past, I had some shedding problems with some snakes. And when that happened, I put some wet paper towel in it or would put the snake in water. But I think the spray works best. It,s like if it was raining lol

i have 3 snakes that usually always give me shed issues. i usually put there water dish on there hot spot and that will heat up the water and make it evaporate much quicker and will actually start to "steam" the tub. Plus it gives them a warm soaking spot. otherwise just a warm bath and some patients. Good luck
