Juvenile coloring vs. Adult...

the_edsta Oct 03, 2010 08:57 PM

Hello, All!

I have been a corn snake lover for a long time and just purchased my first (I realize it may be a slippery slope!). I've always loved classic corns that have a lot of orange in them, but most of the babies I looked at did NOT. Today the lovely gal I purchased was quite dark, and her breeder told me that she was a het for anery and (potentially) ghost. I am wondering if this coloration looks, to those of you with experience, as though she will end up as a normal corn or not. If you check the pics, you'll notice there is not much orange, and most of that is only in the front 1/3 of the snake (the rear being mostly black and white).

Any feedback you can post would be much appreciated! Also: if anyone has pics of a normal he/she owns as both a juvenile and adult, it would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Ed
*Sorry about the size of the pics... I'll resize in the future! At least you won't have to squint...

Normal babies always hatch dark like that, they develop their pretty yellows, reds, and oranges as they get older. You are in for a REAL treat. Every time he sheds it will be like Chrismas, will just keep getting nicer and nicer. Congrats on your new baby! Here is my normal male, he started off dark like yours.

Holy crap! Not only is that snake gorgeous... it's huge! I'd be happy enough w. a snake 1/2 as orange and 1/2 as large!

Thanks, I got him and his sister when they were only a couple weeks old from Kathy Love back in 2002, so they are 8 years old now. They pounds adult rats when they are not brumating or breeding. The male is a total sweetheart. I've used him for many demos. He's been many many people's "first snake" they ever touched. Definitely a great ambassador for snakes. I love that baby corns hatch out different than their adult colors as it makes it funner to watch them grow up. I kept back a normal baby this year and I'm looking forward to watching her colors come in. Your new baby won't let you down

Yes, as Lyn already mentioned, ALL normal corns basically start out very dark when first hatched, then develop their reds, yellows, and oranges later on as they mature. You really can only get an idea of what they might look like when mature by looking at the parents, but they can be pretty variable even then.

This is what most look like as hatchlings. Basically just like yours. You will be pleasantly surprised as to what it will become later on as she also mentioned..LOL!

Many different types of snakes start out life looking NOTHING at all what they will look like as adults. This is a big pile of gene carriers double heterozygous for the hypo lavender morph, but the trait(s)are recessively "hidden" until they are either bred to each other, or back to the original hypo lavender parent. The male parent is in the photo further below breeding with the dark red wild-caught Orlando, Florida corn.

Lol... that is exactly what I want this little gal to grow up to look like, and that is exactly what she looks like now! Thanks for the post... I'm glad this thread is here now; hopefully it will show up in google searches. I tried to find side-by-side pics like the ones in this thread for a while and came up empty handed. I was even more surprised that there wasn't an (easily locatable, at least) article on the color change trends during the maturation of normal corn snakes. (I'm an academic so I generally assume research has been conducted on every topic in the known universe.)
