HL not eating much

blueta Sep 25, 2003 07:40 PM

My hl has pretty much stopped eating. He was killing everything in sight last week and this week he barely eats 1 meal worm, or 5 ants. I have heard of hibernation of these guys and did a search on here but came up empty handed. The search feature here is junk...Can someone give me some pointers? He is losing weight right now because if he is wanting to hibernate the temp it too hot and that's not working out for the best for him.

Search [http://forum.kingsnake.com/cgi-bin/htsearch.cgi] Here[/url] for Hibernation. And keep us posted on your HL's condition.

Thanks guys! He is pretty slim. he never was fat to begin with, always just proper weight. You can see his hip bones now (hard to imagine how fast he lost weight). He seemed to stop losing weight now that I cooled him off. I hope I don't lose him.

Hopefully your HL has enough excess weight to make it through hibernation(Are the hip bones well rounded?). Regardless decrease both photoperiod(10 hrs of light) and room temperature to 65 F(still keep the basking light on). A healthy HL will hibernate on its own by simply burying if you do these things. If the HL stays awake and continues to bask and feed he probably wasn't in proper condition so you should continue to feed the HL if it choses. If you know for a fact your HL is of the proper weight you can induce hibernation with low temperatures minus any heat lighting,(with this method make sure you havn't offered food for 2 weeks to clean out the digestive track, continue to offer water).Jeff
