Reptile Room Heaters Revisited

geckobabies Oct 07, 2010 05:29 PM

Hi guys!

I asked before, but did not get many responses, so I am going to try again.

Anyone have any specific suggestions for using a space heater to help heat a reptile room during winter? I know it needs to be controlled by an external source, but I didn't know if anyone had specific models they have used that were good.

Thanks!

Wal-Mart or K-Mart....look for ceramic heaters or so....some are like $25........plug it in, set it on low....set it at desired temp so it shuts off when it hits your temp....

......I am in basement , cold and damp...(winter dry)....I run 1 heater all year....2 in cold winter....they wear out fast and water screws them up....(why i gotta run 2 alot in cold)...and insulate insulate insulate the room (I didn't )...LOL

........I run cheap heater all year...been doing it for 20 years...and hatch around 150 balls a year and get up to 800 eggs in a great year (no more...corns are gone)...

...good luck....

(The wife whined the oil filled were too expensive to run...I don't look at the bills)....

Thanks Jeff (:

I actually have a cheap $30 ceramic heater also that you can set to 75 or 80 degrees, but it's just that.. cheap. Was hoping there might be a bit better option out there.

I didn't know the oil heaters cost more to run.. that's good info to have.

Thanks for replying!

use one of those Amish made ones they show on tv?...

use a propane heater...?....(good one not fire hazard)

use a pellet stove,...?...

.....not sure what else there is.....

Use an oil filled heater controlled by a Johnson t-stat. Reptile basics has the Johnson t-stats wired with a night drop. The Ranco is similar but doesn't have a night drop.

Looking for a brand of heater that people have had success with. Thanks for the tip on Repti Basics. Have ordered from there in the past with good results.

Thanks!

This is what I use as well (oil filled electric radiator hooked to a separate t-stat)... have had the same one for over 10 years and it is still going strong. I turn the controls on the heater itself all the way up and let the t-stat control it.... just make sure your t-stat is rated for the heater's wattage... a ragular cage t-stat will not work. There are a ton of different brands... any hardware store or Home Depot type place sells them.

Here is an example:

Thanks! No longer available but I'll do some local searching and see what I can come up with.

i actually only use a steam humidifier. The heat from the steam keeps the room around mid 80's and the humidity stays a constant 60%. At night it gets cooler maybe high 70's but i also live in michigan and the nights are starting to get down to 40's here so it works out becuase i almost never have to do a night drop. aslo i have my spare bedroom in my house as my snake room so it has 2 windows and that helps heat it back up during the day.
