A sweet surprise!

Barry Miller Oct 08, 2010 10:24 AM

My favorite female south Brazilian formed follicles last winter, but wouldn’t let the males mate her. She was acting kind of funny, and wouldn’t eat at all, which she normally does even during the breeding season. The males kept trying to breed her, and she kept bucking them. I finally gave up, as she hadn’t eaten in eight months and had apparently reabsorbed. She continued to not eat, and I was 95% sure she wasn’t gravid, if she was it had to be a small slug mass. She looked uncomfortable, and I strongly suspected she had an impaction. I was about to take her to the vet, when I walked in the other morning to find 18 gorgeous babies. She doesn’t look much thinner, I have no idea where she was hiding them!

These pics were taken the day they were born, imagine how nice they’ll look after a shed:

One of them got the job done then they kept trying to mate her after she was gravid. I have a pretty good guess which male, but I'll be able to tell better after they shed. The mother:
