Fecal Impact

livinginvestment Oct 09, 2010 11:57 AM

Looking for suggestions.

I have a 5' female with a rather hard impact. Vet advise baby enemas, which I have done twice with no luck. The amounts were very small and the impact is further up the digestion tract. I tried a small amount of epsom salt added to warm water and gave her about 30 cc. I have left her alone and I am waiting.

He body posturing indicates she is in pain or discomfort so I keep the massaging to a min,

I had a baby snake die from stress after passing a very hard impact. I am trying to prevent this from happening. So I really do want to do anymore enemas and am seeking advice of there are other solutions and what can prevent this (smaller food items, temps, humidity, etc.). I know there is an injection that helps as well. That is the next step ifI cant find anything here to help.

Thanks,

Kenny

What's written above is purely my opinion. In fact, MOST of what you read on the internet is someone's opinion. Don't take it too seriously

Have you tried luke warm baths or soaks?

LarM Oct 10, 2010 12:54 AM

I believe humidity and more fresh water could help. So Boas just
seem to have trouble every once in a while.

You obviously tried soaking her in warm water right ?

Correct, soaking was he first thing I tried. I also soaked after the enemas. I even tried a baby enema mixed with warm water and a pinch of epsom AND a warm soak with no luck. However, there seems to be some movement in the mass.

If she doesn't pass, I have a motility prescription to PU tomorrow from the vet as well as a laxative.

I did receive a call from Eddie who mentioned something that I've not thought of and may be helpful for others.

In larger cages, when the ambient temps drop, the snake may seek warmth by laying on the heating source for extended periods of time. In doing so, two things happen. One, the animals does not move as much or fully extend it's body and allow for natural body flow and function. And two, being on the heat source for extended periods of time causes the body temps to climb to harmful levels and may accelerate the use of body fluids adding to the problem. Makes sense to me.

My girl did stay on her hot side, but I thought (and hoped) she was gravid. X-rays from the Vet proved otherwise.

I have a big salmon boa that did the same thing to me a couple of times when she was about that size. I tried a lot of the same treatments and finally I took her out side and let her crawl around for a while (about 20 or minutes)and low and behold she let loose. I just put her in the grass and had my snake hook handy just in case she thought she was back in South America foraging in the jungle, but no issues she went to the bathroom and I had to do it 2 or 3 more times over the next few months and she seems to be ok now.

I was willing to sacrifice my pool table this morning. Had her out on for the 3 hours I was working. My Retics used to go as soon as soon as they hit the grass, so I know what you mean.
