My dad got me a Lysol Spayer for my Animal Closet. With 30 Rats in my small closet with numerous Snakes and Lizards, it can get pretty smelly.

So were trying to control the scent without harming any of my Reptilians or Rodents.

Is Lysol toxic to Ball Pythons?

I also have a nice Air Filter in there, which seems to help alot.

Any advice would be great.

I would think Lysol sprayed in a closet with all those animals would be a very bad idea. Best way to control the smell is to switch your collection to f/t, and not have 30 rats in your closet... Rats in a freezer don't smell bad at all

I agree, F/T is the best way to go. Lysol and other spray air fresheners are not good for humans, so it can't be good for reptiles either.

Hi,

I agree with my good friend Lyn. Lysol would be a very bad idea. The reason it is effective at knocking out odor causing bacteria is because it is poison. It is toxic stuff that could do serious harm to your feeder collection and consequently your snake collection. There are many more less harmful options for keeping the stink down such as ionizers and carbon filters. However, the best method is to simply change out their bedding every day or two. Yeah, I know, its time and labor intensive, but your rats and humans in the house will thank you for it. Also, rat bedding mixed with kitchen scraps and lawn clippings makes great compost!

I have used lysol wipes for bins in a rack system with no problem.

I have used Lysol for years to wipe the plastic tubs clean. I haven't had any problems, but maybe in a closet where the fumes might concentrate there could be a problem. I always make sure the tubs are drys before i put the snakes back in.

The Lysol is not directly sprayed into, or onto the cages, just in the air beside a large air filter.

The fumes are not heavy in there at all.

For cleaning tubs and cage furnature, then replacing in a rack/cage system after they have been rinsed and dried off, shouldn't cause any problems. I don't recommend spraying any of the 'air freshener' version of Lysol or other products around the cages... If the doors of the closet are closed and you spray the room and ensure there is plenty of ventilation, it probably be alright for the snakes..

I wouldn't risk it though... I do know the air freshener/disinfectant aerosol spray versions of Lysol put me into severe coughing fits....though it may have been the strong bleach my mother was using when she was helping me clean couple weekends ago...

I would also avoid perfume style air fresheners too...the chemicals in those things are deadly...almost as bad as what is in dryer sheets...never could understand the obsession to have extremely powerful perfume scents on everything...to the point they make my eyes water and sinuses burn like I just inhaled acid...

let me tell you i had a bathroom vent installed in my rat room and it works wonders. if thats possible that would be the best option make sure you get a bathroom exhaust fan with a high CFM rating. i leave it on 24 7 doesnt use much electric.

The only tried and true method for keeping your rats from smelling is quite simple: Clean them often.
BTW; "often" does not mean once every two weeks or even once a week. I keep colonies of 1.2 to 1.5 in (30) 4.5 cu. ft. of floor space and I use Beta Chip.
I clean them every three days to keep the smell almost completely non-existant.
I would also imagine that keeping them in a a closet is not the best environment either....
