Only in October?

engagechad Oct 12, 2010 08:15 AM

Hey all - First off, I'd like to say that I tried to search for previous threads regarding this topic, but the search function on Kingsnake is kind of weird and It was hard for me to find out if this has been discussed before (and I'm sure it has.. )

I've got 610 gram het pied male and he'll be ready to breed in a little while after he gets just a bit more hefty and I wanted to know if the window for breeding is ONLY in October. I read a lot about how everyone starts trying to get locks in October and it seems like this is obviously the ideal month, but is it a necessity?

Hypothetically, if my BP were to get hefty and ripe for bonin' in like December or January could I start then? or would it just not work at all.

Please let me know and once again, I apologize if this has been discussed before

Thank you

Chad K. Brown

most people try to mimic the natural breeding aspects....pair during winter months, drop the temperature, feed less...etc...

the fact is breeding can be done at any time of the year. all is dependant if the females' folicles are ready or not....

I see, I see.

So the follicle "ready-ness" is dependent on the female's feeling like it's the natural time to start breeding.

Female ball pythons go through something that is very similar to what a human female goes through in sense of their menstrual cycle. The difference is that human females pass the unfertilized egg, while the female ball python’s follicle gets reabsorbed after a certain size if it’s not fertilized.

One it gets reabsorbed then the cycle starts over again…..that’s the reason why you see early hatchlings and late hatchlings…etc…. the one way to catch them at the right moment is with an ultrasound machine….by measuring the size of the follicle you can use a single male with multiple females and not burn him out.

Okay, Yeah I've read a few things about how to keep a male fresh. I think Markus Jayne does like a 3 on 3 off type schedule when introducing males. 3 days in with female unless lock is visable, then removed for 3 days..

My method is every weekend.....

Introduce males on Friday....they stay together for the weekend and then get pulled out on either Sunday night or Monday night. Depends if I am free to do so.

Whatever works for you, once you get your routine going it will be easy…..

You can breed ball pythons all year round....take a look at the posts on this first page, you'll see plenty of new hatchlings just now coming out. Most people generally like to start around this time of year but it's certainly not the only time.

Very cool,

thanks for the quick response guys!

My wife and I are in the process of buying a house to get out of our 500 sq ft apartment..

It's going to be nice to have room for more snakes and my turts!

I think everyone does it a little different including year round breeding. Most will follow the traditional method of cooling in November and introducing December through April. I do this and try to get 7 - 10 locks per girl by the end of April or until ovulation occurs. Hope this helps.

I usually start cooling after Thanksgiving... It's still too hot in October for me - here in So. Cal.
I don't get eggs till July or August. My first clutch of 2010 just hatched 2 days ago.
