Lily dropped her litter 10/11.......

rainbowsrus Oct 12, 2010 03:35 PM

oh so typical, during my morning rounds I notice a baby out and about in mom's cage....

There were only a couple out and about, pulled the hide and found more babies and slugs....

After a little clean up.....

16 healthy babies, 9 slugs.

Two more litters to go.....

In Lily's litter were two babies with surplus yolk. One tore it off before I had a chance to even look at it. Yup, bled some. The other had more yolk and was a good opportunity for pics and a little tutorial for those interested.

LI-LO-1001 male with surplus yolk....

Step 1 is to pinch the umbilical and force the yolk away from the area you're pinching.....

Next release and check to see if blood flows back into the pinched area...

Yes, in this case blood flowed back in....

Using thread or non flavored dental floss tie off the yolk. Tie it off away from the body so the string does not get pulled back in the body soon....

Once tied you can cut off the yolk on the side of the knot away from the body. Notice there was some blood spilled from the yolk but not the umbilical....

sorry but that pic does not show the string tied around the umbilical, simply the wrong angle. The strings you see are the cut off ends.

Then after a day, snip off a little more of the umbilical to remove the knotted string.

When you pinch off the umbilical if no blood flows back in you can skip the string and simply cut the umbilical. I use small scissors.

Congrats on yet another litter Dave, your having a great season, what's the baby count now?

Also a great post of the yolk detachment, a very interesting piece of info to know.

Thanks for the pics you sent me by email

I just wanted to add an additional coupla notes:

1. When you do this, DON'T PULL ON THE YOLK OR THE STALK. You can cause herniation problems if you aren't careful.

2. It would probably be a good idea to dab a little diluted betadine on the stump, just to hedge against infection. NOT full strength betadine, which can be harsh on tissues -- just take some betadine **solution** (not scrub) and dilut it til it looks like weak tea.

Good pics, Dave!

Yeah, the whole point is to NOT cause any more trauma than necessary.
