Response from Animal Planet

EricWI Oct 13, 2010 06:51 PM

I just received this in my email:

"Our program is to create awareness and education of what is the correct way of looking after pets.
As you know, hoarding is a serious animal welfare problem that affects every community in the country… but hardly anyone is doing anything about it. It’s only when the hoarding degenerates into criminal animal abuse that authorities can get involved. Before then, it festers, with helpless pets locked away inside the homes of people who are often suffering from serious emotional problems.
There are 3,000 - 6,000 animal hoarding case reported in the United States per year. The Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium states that
Animal Hoarding previously known as "collecting", is a poorly understood phenomenon which transcends simply owning or caring for more than the typical number of pets, and affects every community in the US. It has serious consequences for people, animals, and communities. New cases are reported in the media each day, with dozens of others unreported, and still more undetected.
Animal hoarding is a community problem. It is cruel to animals, can devastate families, be associated with elder abuse, child abuse, and self-neglect, and be costly for municipalities to resolve. Without appropriate post-intervention treatment, recidivism approaches 100%. Increased awareness, leading to more comprehensive long-term interventions, is needed. Without appropriate post-intervention treatment, recidivism approaches 100%. Increased awareness, leading to more comprehensive long-term interventions, is needed. (http://www.tufts.edu/vet/hoarding/)

To a hoarding situation, Animal Planet brings together a task force to help tackle the problem from all aspects. We approach every hoarding situation in an individualized manner- looking at the problems from a animal control, social and emotional view point. Our team of psychologists, veterinarians and animal welfare organizations work with concerned friends and family members to craft a real viable solution for the individuals and their pets. We provide psychological help, therapy and family counseling long after our cameras have left the scene.
We are currently in the middle of updating our website - so that the exotic pet community does not misunderstand us. Is the following paragraph sufficient?
"
ANIMAL HOARDING IS NOT ABOUT THE NUMBERS OF ANIMALS PEOPLE OWN

The number of animals that the hoarder keep is NOT the key factor. For example; a exotic pet owner could keep 50 reptiles in their home without being considered a hoarder. However if the owner was unable to provide the correct environments, veterinary care or meet the animals dietary needs, then they have surpassed their capabilities and are no longer putting the needs of their animals first."

Eric,

Hoarding?

Funny, I can't remember a time when "they" went after the bureaucracy of government or the professional politicians for "hoarding" humans in the utopian "Gulags" called housing projects...

Hey "Animal Planet", aren't humans animals too?

Oops, I forgot...Party loyalty means don't even think about biting the hand that feeds you comrade.

Honestly it is hard to argue with anything they sent you in that reply. And it is very impressive they changed the website to address your concerns.

All in all I think your effort and theirs is pretty admirable in this exchange.

Tell Anal Planet they're full of Sh^t, for me! Creating sociological psycho syndromes/phenomena to justify their position is laughable.
What, prey tell do they call their behavior --- media-focused self-righteous hypocrisy syndrome?

That they are Jscrick. At this point, Animal Planet has become so desperate for, and has sunk so low for ratings, that it now is even airing series "inspired by the possibility of the existence" of Mongolian death worms, the jersey devil, vampires, and the lizard man.

I kid everyone not.

wireptile Oct 17, 2010 10:53 PM

Where can I get the Mongolian Death Worms?

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Oct 18, 2010 08:04 AM

I'm known for finding great rarities but even I've never had a "DEATH WORM" ON MY PRICE LIST..lol

This "LOST TAPES" series is more unbelievable than "THE SKUNK APE" which has actually been a subject of the show. AP has sunk to a new all time low....

It is important to remember that Animal Planet produces television. They are NOT animal experts or experts on human phsycology. They are a ratings driven business that has been transformed through huge advertizing dollars into a platform for the Humane Society of the United States. Programing in the last couple of years has become more and more extreme and sensational with a real focus on meeting the ideological desire of HSUS. They crossed the line from educational programing to sensationalized "reality TV" style programing several years ago. Alien Invaders, Fatal Attraction, Hoarders, Whale Wars... does any of that strike you as educational programing? It's not! They are titles that are designed to grab your attention and generate ratings. The content is so outrageous as to be laughable. Although I don't advocate watching AP, if you do also watch who is advertizing. HSUS has turned AP into HSUS TV by pushing big money at them and then dictating programing direction.

The scariest part of the response was where they are trying to redefine "collecting" and replace that word with "hoarding". It is a subtle trick with HSUS fingerprints all over it. They are masters of subtle changes in semantics that can lead to serious legal issues... ie the legal differences between animal "ownership" and "guardianship". That subtle change in language can take away all your property rights to an animal. This tact would turn you from a collector to a hoarder and pidgeon hole you as someone with phsycological problems. They are not experts at anything but making TV. They know nothing about animal husbandry or human phscology. They are taking all their cues from HSUS who also has NO expertize at anything but fundraising and advocacy for their idealogical agenda.

Animal Planet is a big network that gets comparatively disappointing ratings. So when ..........

Big businesses with strong followings like the HSUS and Peta are willing and more importantly able to dump substantial amounts of cash into the channel. The network is going to do the smart thing and play ball with them.

If there were influential pro animal keeper businesses that could drop hundreds of thousands of dollars into Animal Planet. The programming would look much different.
