An interesting S. Hognose Observation

Sandhisser Oct 15, 2010 10:30 AM

I recently aquired two young captive born simus from my buddy. This is my second time feeding them as the first time they refused scented pinks. This go round I tried to pull the swich by putting a cricket frog in the cage and then switching it with a scented pinky. It worked for one of them, but after he finished feeding the one that did not take a pink latched on to him and began trying to subdue him. Luckily, I was watching all of this and picked them up to separate them. This was when the smaller of the two snakes coiled around the other one and tried to take charge. Anyways, I got them separated and as of now both are fine. I learned a good lesson about feeding two of them in the same cage. But none the less, it was pretty cool, as I was not aware that simus ever tried to constrict prey.

Believe it or not, I have witnessed hognose constriction with a WC eastern many moons ago, back when I was a wee lad. He would frequently coil around his toads before swallowing.

I have occasionally seen giant Malagasy hogs constrict as well.

Hey Michael, didn't know you were over here!

I have a few tricolors that do the death roll when they grab their food.

To the original post, hoggies have good feeding responses and will occasionally eat each other....case in point...Bubba here traveled in a deli for an hour with his sister...this is a pic of both of them

Now a pic of him beside a sibling...yes they were the same size when the trip started! Bubba will eat anything!!

Good thing you were there to seperate them.
