Grayband brumation

mrkent Oct 17, 2010 10:18 AM

Still sort of new to alternas. Yesterday all three of mine decided they weren't hungry. When do you all cool yours, and for how long? Do you cool your males and females together or separate?

Also, is a cool temp in the low 60s ok?

Thanks.

I typically brumate my Graybands for about 3 months in the low to mid 50s. Its best to separate them. You always want to make sure that you stop feeding them for two to three weeks before brumating them and make sure they have water while they brumate. I've have very good luck breeding adults and getting hatchlings to feed after cooling them for three months. Hope this helps. Alterna1

Low to mid 50s? Thats cooler than I would have thought, but when my daughter moves out next week I can use her room as a hibernaculum.

I also have some rubber boas and a corn snake that need to be cooled. I have moved the rubber boas to the garage already, but will probably move them to the spare room, since I can control the temp there better.

I will probably leave a pair of alternas together for the winter, since they have been together for over a year. Then I will separate them in the spring, since that particular female will still need at least another year of growth before she is big enough to breed.

Yes I was planning to wait a couple more weeks to make sure they have finished digesting their last meals.

That if you water bowls freeze you let it get to cold.
