Lamar line?

amazondoc Oct 18, 2010 12:07 AM

Hey all --

I just learned that the Lamar line traces back to snakes that were originally collected around Iquitos Peru. So --

did these actually start with Peruvian rainbows?? Was anybody even paying any attention to the different subspecies back then?

2.0 Brazilian rainbow boas (Arco, Olho)
1.3.1 Honduran milksnakes (Chicchan, Chanir, Chakar, Hari, Saksak)
1.0 Thayeri kingsnake (Coatl)
0.0.1 Mexican black kingsnake (Mora)
2.4.4 corns (Cetto, Tolosa, Uce, TBA)

The snakes in the Iquitos area of Peru are Brazilian Rainbows. They have scale counts just like Brazilian Rainbows over the rest of the very large range of the Brazilian subspecies. The range of E.c.gaigei starts further south in Peru and extends south from there. Many of the snakes exported from the Iquitos area were produced by a breeder who honestly represents them as Brazilian Rainbow boas and dealers have been known to sell them as Peruvians after they arrive here in the US.

The Lamar Strain originated in Vaupes, Colombia. The most beautiful cenchria come from the extreme northwest Amazon Basin in Ecuador and Colombia. Gaigei is no longer recognized as valid. See Passos, Paulo and Ronaldo Fernandes 2008. Revision of the Epicrates cenchria Complex (Serpentes: Boidae). Herpetological Monographs 22 (1): 1-30
