Soft Eggs, normal?

RG Oct 18, 2010 07:47 AM

I was just checking my Honduran eggs yesterday and noticed that one clutch felt different than the others...they felt soft.

Soft as in not as turgid and not as abrasive as the other two clutches.

They are due to hatch in about 2 weeks and I was just wondering if that was the difference or maybe something else?

I check them once a week, but this is the first time I touched them or remember feeling a difference.

Could they be too moist or not moist enough?

I'm just concerned; I'm really looking forward to this clutch hatching.

Any suggestion or information would be great.

Thanks,
Rusty

Well, sometimes eggs that are near full-term will seem a bit less firm, but many times they don't too. If the incubating medium still seems moist enough it is probably nothing to worry about, but if it feels a tad dry, you might want to take the eggs out and remix just a bit of water back into the medium.

I certainly hope all those hatch out for you man!

good luck!

If the incubation medium has a lot of bacteria in it they will eat away at the shell as they did to my e. milk eggs. I used moss from outside (I had to create the chamber while at a summer camp) and with high humidity and low ventilationt eh chamber became a breeding ground for bacteria. Research on alligators shows that bacteria play a role in breakdown of the shell. If that is the cause, it should be harmless.
