Are you perhaps talking about the individual mentioned in this article (PDF)?
A Scaleless Snake: Test of the Role of Reptilian Scales in Water Loss and Heat Transfer by Paul Licht and Albert F. Bennett (1972).
Photo from the paper is here -- sorry for the link - embedding wouldn't work!
i think they are from the same project but the pics i found where color,
Maybe you seen this one. I don't know anything about it. I think you can find this picture under photos here on ks.

I saw one for sale in the classifieds a few years ago, I think it was a San Diego. Not sure where it ended up.

You found this in your yard???
yes sir. I thought it was dead, sun baked or something, then approached him and realized he is VERY much alive and healthy lol.
Wow - very cool find.
For what it's worth (no pun intended) it would be great to see that little guy (or gal?) end up old, healthy and the parent of many offspring... especially if it's lack of scales is heritable.
If you hang on to it - spare no expense in keeping it healthy and happy
If you decide to sell or donate it (e.g. to a zoo or something) - make sure it goes somewhere where it will be well cared for and part of an established breeding colony.
... and definitely keep the photos coming! Any chance for a few macro shots?
You are exactly right my friend. I want it to find a home where many more people could appreciate it for its genetic uniqueness. I would LOVE to keep him/her, but it just wouldn't seem right for me to be the only person to ever really see it. I am weighing my options at this point, but also trying to find the right home for it, not just the highest payer. I will post more pics tomorrow. I just need to take more.
Cool snake. It would be cool to breed to an albino, whitesided, reduced pattern or ghost.
