bakeaway Oct 18, 2010 05:50 PM

Hi,

Well i saved and finally got a Freedom Breeder Rack. Does anyone know where you put the thermostat probe?
And now my old rack will be empty,,,empty cages,,,not a good idea.

Thanks

First of all congrats on your FB rack. You won't be disappointed.

I would place your probe just above center, in a tub in the middle of the rack. Additionally, in order to replicate the temp in the tub with the probe, as close as possible to the others, I also keep a full water cup in there too. (Don't really know how much of a difference this makes but it stands to reason, since all the other tubs have a water cup).

Taking the ambient temp of the room into consideration, and since heat rises, the temp in the tubs toward the top of the rack are going to be slightly higher. So by placing the probe slightly higher than center, this will give you optimum control of the entire rack, specifically while limiting the heat in tubs that are going to get warmest.

Although this is what I've always done, and works well, hopefully someone else will weigh in also with some other methods.

Good luck! And BTW, I LOVE your Axanthic!!!

thanks,,so you are saying actually place it in the tub. Attach it to the bottom on the inside?

Yeah, exactly. What I do is notch a small gap in the top rim of the tub, on the side closest to where the wire runs down the rack to the tub. You can use a soddering gun with a 1/8" tip. Just heat up the gun, and set the edge on the rim of the tub and it'll melt right down....but just enough so the probe's wire fits inside, and still allows you to slide the tub in. I put the probe in toward the rear. But just in front of the flex watt so it's not directly on the heat. This will allow you to control the "average" temp in the tubs. I also put a digital thermometer inside that tub to monitor the actual temp inside. This give me a pretty good idea of the other tubs near the top and near the bottom of the rack.

If in doubt, call Jeff at FB, and he'll set you straight!

Again, keep in mind, there's a lot of ways to skin a cat!
