Is my boa ok?

Amp Oct 19, 2010 12:17 AM

In one of my adult male boas cages today I noticed something strange floating in the water bowl. I saw what appeared to be 2 white stringy sacks, each approximately 2 inches in length and about 1/8 inch in diameter, and they were attached to each other at one end on the side of the metal water dish. They didn't appear to be urates and there was no appearance or smell of defecation. Can anyone identify what the substance is, and if there is any significance to it? Should I be worried? I had an adult female boa for 10 years and never noticed anything like this, so I'm wondering if it's gender related.

Thanks,
Anthony

This is what I refer to as a hemipenes shed. Just like the rest of the snake sheds, the penis sheds too. This is perfectly normal, and you should be congratulated for being so observant of your boa.Good job.

It's not gender related. Gender refers to masculinity or femininity (anthropomorphism). It is sex related, in this case, pertaining to a male boa.

The sexes are male and female. The genders are masculine, feminine, and neuter.

We have a lot of smart people on this forum. I figured it had something to do with his reproductive organs. I just wasn't sure what. Is this possibly a sign that maybe one of my females may be ready to receive a mate? In other words, do they do this all year round or only when stimulated?

Thanks,
Anthony
