Comparing Ctenosaura

This year I was lucky enough to hatch out both melanosterna and palearis. The palearis are a first for me. The babies are from approx two to three year old animals that originated from a Petco. Considered the same species till 1997 I think. Here are some pictures to compare how similar the babies are. In picture one and two the palearis is on the left side. In picture three the palearis is on the right side. These pictures were taken when the animals were about 18 days old.

Amazing that they came from Petco! What were they labeled as?

They were labeled as club tail iguanas. I am not really up on my laws and regs but I believe they were protected in Guatamela and they were still coming in. I know they were coming in as recently as a year ago because Switzer Reptile was getting them in and hatched out some of the eggs they got from wild caught females. They are really beautiful when they are adults.

Yep I have some from last spring when they came into the country. It was an insane amount, almost like an entire breeding colony. I have two pair.

Even as babies, you can tell the melanosterna by the darker chest hence the name "melano-sterna"
