IL- Orland Park to outlaw exotic pets

EricWI Oct 21, 2010 04:20 PM

Alligators and crocodiles would be outlawed in Orland Park according to proposed revisions to the village’s Animal Control Ordinance slated to be considered by the village board.
Village trustees Jim Dodge and Patricia Gira endorsed the revisions earlier this week in their roles as members of the Public Safety Committee.
Dodge called the banning of exotic animals outside their natural habitats “one of my pet issues. We shouldn’t allow exotic species,” he said, suggesting the exportation of wildlife from the Everglades is damaging its ecosystem.
Police Chief Tim McCarthy, responding to a committee question, acknowledged police “have run across alligators” in the village in the past.
Related recommended changes include restricting hunting in Orland Park to licensed trappers, and banning leg traps. McCarthy said ordinances already prohibit discharging a firearm in the village.
Some of the more routine suggested changes include requiring dogs to be leashed outside their yards, and preventing dogs secured in yards from menacing passersby

I thought IL state law already prohibits crocodilian ownership?
