breeding fb toads

anichcha May 26, 2003 12:03 PM

hello -- i've been hearing mating calls from my fire bellied toad tank, followed sometimes by the rapid pleading of what i assume to be another male toad. today, however, i looked in when the oop oop mating calls began, and i noticed a large toad on top of (and grasping) a smaller toad -- the bottom one struggled away and made the "get off me" noise, so then the top toad went to another toad in the pond, climbed on, and well ... just stayed there.

my questions are: should i be expecting eggs? if so, approximately how many days after breeding are the eggs depostited?

thanks all!

im not sure about how many days, but they do that all the time. i have 3 FBT. i thought i had 2 guys and a girl but after a few weeks of watching i saw i had all guys. dont give your hopes up they might be guys. (unless you know you have a girl) they dont care what sex the other is.

looks great so far -- can you tell me more about the false bottom? its function, etc. thank you

thanks, i should have the background, tree conks, and soil by the end of this week.

mainly a false bottom is a resivior where the excess water can deposited. in a dart tank a flase bottom or drainage of some sorta is a must with humidity reaching 100%. once the water drains in have to remove it. this can be done by drilling a hole in the bottom of the tank. or, like me, you can add a peice of pvc for example in the substrate somewhere and cover it with small rocks so it not visible and once the water is high enough just locate that pvc pipe, put a siphon tube in it and siphone out the water.

theres many ways to make one. here is what i plan to do. (in order from the bottom to top

1 silicon pvc spacers in place
2 add eggcrate
3 add layer of fiberglass screen mesh as a filter so gravel doesnt fall through
4 another layer of screen mesh as a filter
5 substate and plants

if you have any more questions just ask me or the fourm(s), who can probibly give a better answer
