Lets start the day with a poop question

markg Oct 22, 2010 12:18 PM

I actually do have a reason for this question. A local school wants a colubrid-sized snake. I would like to provide one that requires the least poop pickup. I think the most commonly-kept colubrids tend to require about the same maintenance in that regard, but I'd thought I ask here.

Between say a Florida king and a cornsnake - which requires the most cage cleaning?

To me the king is more active and more likely to make a mess, painting the walls. Not like an Indigo or anything but to me a corn will be more predictable and clean.

I definitely have to roll with Soya on this Mark. The floridana are very demanding about their voracious appetites too, and my brooksi and Outer Banks are messier than a typical cornsnake would be of comparable size.

I sure wish colubrids had the same sort of metabolism as a Boa constrictor or python, and pooped every 10 to 14 days or so in a much more solid mass.

Man, all I seem to do is clean cages three times as much as I feed..LOL!. I hate the way........

1 meal = 2 to 3 poops!

Yeah, I would go with the corn Mark, not to mention the kings might tend to get more "snappy" if a meal is skipped far more than a corn would. You don't want the kid's parents having fuel for school board law suites..HAHAA!

Since I haven't had corns here in quite awhile other than very temporary snake-sitting, I could not remember how they compared to kings and milks in the cage cleaning dept.

I agree on the king attitude, too. A corn is the better fit.

I personally think that corn snakes are great ambassadors for snakes. They were very forgiving of my novice mistakes and they have never made me nervous handling them. i was scared to get bitten as a kid. The more i got bit the more that fear went away. Even today though the psychological impact of an adult kingsnake wrapping around your wrist and chewing on your hand and attempting to swallow your fingers gives me that old chill i remember as a kid. Definitely not a good story for a kid to run home and tell some uptight parent!

I have had the worst luck with corn snakes in regard to temper! I (literally) have had more calm reticulated pythons than calm corn snakes...

We wouldn't have 6 and a half billion people if you had to be beautiful to get laid.
6.6 African House snakes
3.2 reticulated pythons
.1 corn snake
4.2 Florida Kings
1.2 speckled kings
1.2 ball pythons
0.0.1 Argentine boa

Yeah...no snake is guaranteed to be calm. I have 4 corn snakes and they are like overgrown worms as far as temperament. I have a normal ball python who is downright grouchy. i raised her from hatchling and she never calmed down. While i wouldnt be suprised to see an aggressive corn snake the fact that you have encountered a few (im assuming thats what you meant) is an anomaly. I guess i am the same as you when it comes to kingsnakes. I have had the worst snake experiences you can have with kingsnakes which is a bummer because i think they are awesome!

More squirmy and poop-flingy than bitey per se (even as adults). Which sucks cause with corns, or other small snakes I'd rather get bit than pooped on.

Kings I've had similar luck with california kings, but good luck with florida kings *shrug*
