OT Question....

Jlassiter Oct 24, 2010 12:24 AM

I posted this on the Python forum but have yet to get a response....

Loxocemus Bicolor (Mexican Burrowing Python or New World Burrowing Python).....They are no longer classified as a python and have been given their own status.

I currently have 2.2 Loxocemus Bicolor here on breeder loan from a friend. I have never bred these before nor has alot of folks and am asking for any input concerning Aestivation and Breeding.

I got some emails forwarded to me from Bill Becker, but would love to hear any one else's experience with these cool snakes.....

I have them on a light cycle corresponding to the seasons as pointed out by Bill Becker. 12 light / 12 dark until Winter hits then its 10 light and 14 dark. I am dropping their temps to 80F for 3 months and feeding them once a month during this slight temperature drop...also as directed by Mr. Becker.....heavy feeding after being warmed up in the Spring......

Does anyone else have any experience with these? There haven't been very many folks here in the US that have successfully bred these......I would love to see some fertile eggs hatch from them next year........

John,

Contact Rick Staub. He has worked with this species in the past and might still have a few in his collection.

I'm pretty sure those had a common name of python but were never officially in the pythonidae family.

Never seen one in person or personally knew anyone working on them. I toyed the idea very briefly but frankly thought I'd start out on something where there were other people I could ask questions...

We wouldn't have 6 and a half billion people if you had to be beautiful to get laid.
6.6 African House snakes
3.2 reticulated pythons
.1 corn snake
4.2 Florida Kings
1.2 speckled kings
1.2 ball pythons
0.0.1 Argentine boa

I checked out my "Reproductive Husbandry of Boas and Pythons" (Richard A. Ross, MD, MPH) and is states "No successful captive breeding of Loxocemus is known."

Of course it's an old book (1990) and times change, but I think you're in for a challenge. It does state that a few clutches of wild-bred snakes were deposited in the month of March.

Tim,
Since 1990 Bill Becker, Stan Grumberg, Rick Staub and others have gotten them to successfully reproduce in captivity.........

I have a lot of notes from Bill Becker. The owner of this group has been emailing him and forwarding the replies to me.......

I was just wondering if anyone had anything to add......

I think I'm in for a challenge as well......But it would be cool to see some hatch over here.......
