De-worming V. macraei...

bmendyk Sep 26, 2003 12:35 AM

Hey there everyone,
I have just recieved yet another blue tree monitor into my collection. THis one happens to be a relatively fresh import. I have done as much research as I could concerning acclimation techniques with indo varanids, but have come across conflicting material concerning the proper doses/regiments used for dewoming these guys. I have used fenbendazole(panacur), and metronidzol(flagyl) in the past on becarri, and have had favorable results. However, I have found conflicting material as to the dosages, and frequencies of treatment. Are the members of the tree monitor complex prone to being infested with cestodes as well as the common protozoa and nematodes? Would droncit be appropriate as well. Also, when administering flagyl and panacur- can you give it to them in a "cocktail" or must the treatments be separated- the reason why I ask is that I just want interact with this macraei as little as possible; any additional stress would be harmful to him. Any thoughts, recommendations, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time,
bob mendyk

Not trying to be a smarta$$, but that question is for Vets, either find a Vet forum or consult a good reptile vet.

As a longtime breeder of varanids, I somehow get a gut feeling, that either the use of those drugs or possibly the over infestations, cause servere reproductive complications. As we see a high(very high) incidence of ovarian and other organ failure in treated individuals that I do not see with untreated individuals.

You must keep in mind, drugs used on reptiles are not specific for reptiles. Also, there is no consideration to how they effect the reproductive abilities of reptiles. And lastly, there is no consideration on the longterm effects these drugs have on reptiles. But they do get rid of parasites. F

That's pretty scary, given that my vet wants to deworm everything I bring in and sometimes does it without a parasite test and without even asking me first.

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?
