Prey size Q

pavel Oct 25, 2010 08:27 PM

Sorry for what is undoubtably an overly asked Q but I was having trouble getting this site's search engine to narrow down my search in a reasonable timeframe.

I very recently adopted a 4.5 ft "bubble gum" rat snake. Wonderful temperment and very "handlable".

The previous owner was feeding it FT adult mice. My Q is simply: "Is that the best size to use or would rat pups be more appropriate?"

The general rule of thumb is to feed a snake a food item that is the same size or slightly larger than its head.
A four foot snake will eat two or three mice this size every 7-10 days. As the animal gets larger feed every 10 days.
If a meal is refused its not a problem offer again in a couple of days or if its "blue" then after its shed.
Mike.
