dumb question about heat cable

adamjeffery Oct 25, 2010 11:47 PM

so i bought a used animal plastics 1756-10 with a herpstat classic thermostat. it is connected to heat rope/cable.
it has been hooked up for about 12 hours and the thermo is set for 89. my digital thermometer still is only reading 80 on the surface of the aspen. when i touch the heat rope it doeant feel warm at all.
how can i check the rope to see if its working other than hooking it up to full power? my infra red thermometer quit working after my son got ahold of it so the digital is all i have right now.
is there a way to make sure the herpstat is working correctly?
thanks for the help

Plug the heat cord directly into the wall and feel it to see if it gets hot. Don't leave it unattended and after ten minutes or so if it's not warm/hot to the touch it's fried and will need to be replaced.

We've had three heat cords go bad and replaced them all then switched to heat tape.

Where is the probe attached? If the probe is attached directly to the heat cord it's quite possible the inside of the container won't reach more then 80 degrees. You might have to set it to 95 or even 100 to reach a hotter spot inside the container.

well i plugged the cable directly to the wall and let it sit for 20 minutes and it didnt change the temp at all. ill be ordering the zoomed cable at the end of this week. it comes in the same length that was on my rack.
thanks for the help.
also the animal plastics rack has probe location routed into it. about an inch away from the cable.

Why not get the heat cable that is supposed to be in the rack? Call Animal Plastics to see If they have it and what length you need. If they don’t have it you can order it from the following link. I have replaced them a few times when I used an on-off thermostat but haven’t had to do it once in five years since I switched to proportional. Here is the link. www.morelectric.com/hb.htm

that looks exactly like what came out of the rack, i already removed the old stuff and measured it and i need 23 feet. which is exactly the same size as the zoomed. i will contact animal plastics and see what there prices are. 56 bucks shipping is a lot compared to 21 shipped for the zoomed. im not a cheap skate but i cant imagine much difference between the two, at least not a 35 dollar difference.
thanks for the link and ill email animal plastics tonight to see what they suggest. ill research zoomed before i buy, as the one in the link looks EXACTLY like what i removed right down to the sticker location on the orange lead.
thanks again
