How long have you had your oldest turtle?

kanuck May 26, 2003 12:15 PM

Did you house him indoors or outside? Was he hibernated or not?
If inside, what was your setup like? If outside, what area of the country are you from? Just very curious as to what's going on in with pet box turtles and how long on average you've kept them healthy.

i have had my oldest girl for about a year and a few weeks. The vet and i think she is a little over 50 yrs. but we don't know for sure. All we know is that she is young enough to be laying eggs becuase she is gravid as i am typing. Though when i was little we moved into a house that had 2 box turtles in the back yard. Of course i was to little to tell the if they were male/female, Eastern/tree toed ...etc. But since then I've had never gone long with out finding a box turtle in the bushes at a new house.

I have had my three toed box turtle for about 1 year. But i got her from a girl that had her for 5 yrs and a couple ad her for atleast 10before that.So I figure she is atleast 16yrs old. She has always been kept indoors on carpeting in a small tank before i got her. She was pretty sick when i got her since she was onyl eating oranges and lettuce.

I now have her living outside for the summers and inside in the winters and she has gotten alot better. She has also never beed hibernated.

I've had my three-toed for about 12 years, and he wasn't "young" at the time I got him. I estimate that he is at least 20, but he could be a little bit older.

I've had one of my three-toed box turtles for 21 years, and he was old when I got him, around 30 years old, so he's probably in his 50s now. He hasn't hibernated for 21 years. He stays most of the time in an indoor terrarium with a natural light, water dish, and covered hot rock. I take him out occasionally in the summer time to be with the female three-toeds in the outdoor enclosure. He eats bananas, mulberries, and hamburger mixed with minced carrots.

I have a male three toed box turtle that I've had for 21 years. He was the second turtle I ever got. After looking back on my husbandry when I was a kid, I'm surprised this turtle lived. I kept him in a 10 gallon aquarium with fish gravel. I did let him go outside a lot. Now he has a 4'x 3' enclosure with cypress mulch and a small pool. As for hibernation. I never really put him in a true hibernation. The past few years he will stay under the subrstrate for a few weeks, come out get some water, go to the bathroom and bury himself again. So I guess that is sort of like a hibernation. The temps remained in the low 70's upper 60's during the winter. I recently aquired a female three toed. Next year I might try to breed them (they are not together now).
