Cork Bark background

iamonlyatree Sep 26, 2003 01:42 AM

What is your opinion on the best method of attaching cork bark background to the back of the tank - just silicon, foam expander, or otherwise? thanks!

You can look on my website below and see how I built my imitator tank.

Use silicon to hold it on and then foam to fill the cracks. Unless you plan to use the foam to form a part of the background.

is that foam waterproof and is it ok for frogs? seems alittle dangerous.

From what others have posted it is fine, and non toxic after it has fully dried.

wow, that is an idea to keep in mind. that stuff is great. what is the product name of the stuff your thinking about? I'm thinking of "great stuff".

It is completely safe. Just do NOT get it on your hands or any other body part. It's not kidding on the label that it is nearly impossible/impossible to get off your skin. It took 4 months to get the last of it off my fingernails. Trust me, wear long sleeves and gloves. I got annoyed and took off the gloves, and I regretted it for a long time. That doesn't mean I won't be using it with my new tanks this week for Phelsuma though...
Best,

How easy is it to get the foam off glass if you ever need to strip the tank down?

Divegod Sep 26, 2003 12:28 PM

Hard. What I did was put the 'great stuff" onto a backing of eggcrate, then coat the hardened foam with "weldbond", attached moss/peat, and went from there. Came out pretty good.

He has a VERY good point. That stuff sticks like MAD. One thing I have not figured out how to do is clean the nozzle that comes with it. Due to the same issue...

We were very careful about not getting it on the glass, but I would think a razor blade should get it off without too much problems. I'll be playing with it again next week, so I'll let you know then.

I could figure that one out for a while either. But its actually very easy. Just pull off the plastic tube, twist off the nozzle, and let it dry for an hour or so. Then just use a long thin piece of plastic or metal (a straightened clothes hanger works good) to push all the gunk out of the tube, and scrape all the foam out of the nozzle. Shouldnt be too hard to do, it wasnt for me. There also might be a little bit left in the tip of the can where you screw in the nozzle. Talk to you later.
