Possible Het Red Axanthic?

ohernz Oct 26, 2010 05:34 PM

These are the pics of my friend's female ball python I mentioned in a previous post, and one of her sons I am breeding her with this season. For comparison I am also posting a pic of a Het Red Axanthic from the Internet

The first pic is y friends female (Het Red?). The second pic is a Het Red Axanthic from the Internet. The third pic is the male (her offspring) I will be breeding her to

hmm..they all look like normals to me... just leaning more towards reddish brown than typical normal browns/blacks... Are there visual het markers for Red Axanthic? (sorry I don't' remember...and I suck at subtle morph identification...even with visual hets...or dominate/codom traits if they fall in the subtle category).

Hopefully the more experienced breeders with this morph will chime in and give more expert opinions than mine.

Well, I guess the real proof will be on the outcome of their pairing...

I feel pretty confident in saying, that after seeing a thousand or so het reds at Corey Woods' house over almost eight years, that neither of those two animals are het reds.

i have an adult pair of het reds and bred my male to a normal this year. if you have had the baby since it came out of the egg you would know for sure. het reds are very black pastel/axanthic looking before their first shed. they become more normal looking with each shed after. by looking at yours i would say you may have a genetic black back ,but they do not look like het reds to me. they are missing the squiggles and the flames and the color is slightly off.

on the plus side black back butters look really good if you have a butter to use. they also enhance other morphs as well.

Thank you for all the messages, after looking at the links suggested and reading all the opinions, it seems that these snakes ARE NOT Het Reds...only pretty normals. I am planning on breeding them together anyway and see what happens...
Thank You!

I beg to differ. The one thing about HRA's is that they vary alot in comparison to other mainstream morphs. There are many bad(lower grade)examples of what people are calling HRAs and it makes it very difficult for people to decifer whats a HRA and whats not. The male you show below shows the main signs of what I look for as indicators...the bubbly sides, 1/2 to 3/4s of the back is reddish, higher white sides between the flames as well as the black hash marks in the brown bubbles, and most of the HRAs have a line behind the head with a circle in it as well(not always). Like i said though, its not always a given being the vary but if you stick with that I think you are good. As For the mother, she seems to have the keys indicators but may be a low grade or harder to decifer variant. One thing is if you breed the sone to her and you dont produce RA's you still dont know if she is a HRA herself. Who was the father of that clutch?

I hatched out a clutch of YB x HRAs and they are in the first shed but they are making very hard to see which are who but i have some really exceptional HRAs for sure.

The father of that clutch is a normal. He is in shed right now, as soon as he is back to his normal colors I will post a pic. That male was the only one I kept from the clutch because of his blcak back. I have pics of the other males, will post them. And I will post pics of the female siblings.
