Proof reading

Perhaps this is just a result of my AR issues; but, does anyone proof read before posting? I am beginning to think that Herpetophiles are barely literate.

It bugs me, too. I suppose there is a subculture out there that operates on the notion that any assemblage of words and misspelled words, if barely reconizeable, will get them by. Some posts are written by very young people, on others are written by the truley illiterate.

Posts that are real bad I just skip. I write and speak at about the 9th grade level, and get acccused of using big words. But I was in grammar school in he 1950's.

I do know that some posts cannot be understood because of poor spelling and grammar. Sometimes I think that people are just trying to get their thoughts or questions down quickly and don't take the time to proofread. If you have ever proofread before (I worked for a printing company and did) you will also know that if you are the one that typed something in many circumstances, if you expect to see one word or spelling then that is what you will see even if it is not what is there! Lastly some people like me can be very good at spelling and definitely not illiterate (teaching and vet courses and definitely not a child!) but placing your hands on the keyboard incorrectly can lead to quite a problem or just the fact of not being very good at typing can throw all those years of good spelling out the window when you are typing instead of writing!! I do have to say I am not very good at proofreading anymore because after spending years doing the same thing it has become very tedious. So I always hope to get my point accross missed keystrokes, slipped fingers and all!!

Also this is an iguana forum if we start criticizing peoples grammar and spelling how many will continue to post here and how many will move to somewhere that people offer help without criticism?!!

Some authors fingers have wandered so frequently that it can be difficult to decifer what words have been typed. Also, for any communication venue to be valuable and helpful some room for criticism or argument must be made. Helpful does not = agreeable or non-confrontive. I value the truth above social niceties. When I need information, perpetuating my incorrect ideas to avoid hurting feelings or seeming mean, is not useful. I will acknowledge that I may be a little a.r. on this topic. Thanks.

The problem is that there is an entire generation of kids growing up using net slang, thinking its acceptable and will get them by. I know my spelling isn't perfect and my grammar isn't perfect, but I hope I write clearly and mostly correctly.

I skip posts that use the really bad short forms, like ur insead of you're, or u instead of you. Thats just lazy, and difficult to read. And yes, as an avid online gamer I'm quite fluent in d00d sp34k, I just prefer not to read it. Unfortunately, I think that the people who type this way don't realize it makes them look uneducated, ignorant and unknowledgeable on the topic, when that may not be the case at all. There's a big difference between lazy and sloppy writing, and not having english as a first language.

the speed available on computers today. I remember when I could go make a sandwich in the time it took me to load my favorite daily web comic strip! I waited, because I knew it would be worth reading. Now, I don't get as annoyed with useless information or information conveyed in an ineffective way, because it doesn't take that much of my time for a post to load, see it's poorly written, and go back to the main page. Annoying, yes, but not the waste of 6 or 7 minutes that it would have been ten years ago.
