breeding... age or weight

dtejeda_arias Oct 27, 2010 07:01 AM

I've been doing research about breeding. A lot of useful info out in the web but nothing better then asking people on kingsnake! My question is what's more important when it comes to breeding. If the female is already 1800g does it matter her age?

Not really. If she's 1800 grams and looks thick for her length, she should be fine. The only issue with just basing it on weight is that sometimes people forget to take length into consideration. A 3.5 foot 1500 gram animal will probably be a better candidate than a 5 foot 1800 gram animal. that being said, most females won't hit a breedable weight until, at the earliest, their second winter-usually their third.

I agree with the previous poster. You not only have to take weight into consideration, but condition as well. I currently have two females who are the same age and approximately the same weight. However, for whatever reason, my Pastel female put most of her growth into length. While my Cinnamon put a lot of her weight into girth. I am breeding the Cinnamon this year because she has good weight and heft (or robustness, call it what you will), but not the Pastel because she is so skinny she looks like a male. Other breeders might have different opinions, however.

Everyone has got it right in my opinion, i have a few early 09 girls that are 1600 but they are nothing but girth but i have 2 06 girls that are 1900 grams but they still look way too skinny for me to even think about doing anything with. I have heard though that age may come into play just because the snake itstelf may not be mature enough and just may not take if they are only in their first year.

the question is she a.....

long and skinny 1800g'er

or

short and thick 1800g'er.

the long and skinny could possibly take, but the chances of her slugging out is a whole lot higher.
