PRB VS BRB Scale count

Z_G_Reptiles Oct 30, 2010 09:57 AM

The previous thread got me thinking that not everyone, including myself, know exactly how to count scales on these animals and some people do best with visual illustrations. Would anyone be able to an illustration of how/where to count the scales on these 2 and what count is which animal? maybe something similar to this thread I posted on Blood/Short-Tailed Pythons?

There's a couple of good diagrams on how to count scales, here:

I can't remember for sure who had posted it previously, but I thought that either Jeff or Dave had posted a close-up picture of either actual BRB scales or it was an old shed that they had drawn on the correct way to count scales. I can't seem to find that old post in the archives but I'm also not great at searching for old posts like some of you forum wizards. Just thought I'd mention it, hopefully someone else can dig up a link to that old post

That link that amazondoc posted

shows it better than anyone could explain with words.

My numbers from counting scale rows on perhaps 50 Brazilians and around 20 Peruvians. Peruvians 41 to 43 scale rows at midbody. Brazilians 45 to 51. Some snakes with 44 to 45 are perhaps intergrades. I think there is a new number in the Passos and Fernandes paper for Brazilians. I think I saw it in there somewhere but I took a quick look now and I cannot find it.

Jeff, the count for dorsal scales rows used in the Passos and Fernandes paper was for the Peruvian (E. c. gaigei)40-43and the Brazilian (E. c. cenchria) 47–51. Page 8 middle of left collum.

Its not hard to 'write' on an image...most basic photo editors will have the needed tools.

If anybody has good pictures of Peruvian Rainbow boas scales and Brazilian Rainbow Boa scales, I can try my hand at showing how the scale counting is done.

Though the black/white drawings provided are fantastic examples and very clear.
