Best Snake Cage?

wmerker Oct 31, 2010 11:07 PM

If you haven't posted this in the species specific forum I recommend cross posting it.

Also giving the members of this forum the particular species and the number of inhabitants you wish to display will often yield the best results.

Of course your goal in the cage will also give users the direction of where your going and perhaps que some great ideas.

Cheers

I'd be curious to read the rest of this. Seems you were cut off before finishing that thought.

But with that said, I don't believe there is a perfect cage on the market. Every cage has some sort of tradeoff. The one thing you do have control over is the door type. Decide first if you want sliding bypass doors or hinged? If hinged do you want one door or two? Do you want those doors (or door) to flip downards are open sideways?

You might never see the perfect cage but at the very least you can get the door arrangement you prefer.

I found out the hard way that like sliders. I'm in the process of changing over a couple dozen cages right now. It's a good thing I enjoy working on the cages almost as much as keeping the animals. If only I had some place to put them all so I wasn't working on one or two cages at a time. That's a pain.

Sorry about that... The rest of my message got cut off. I am working with Desert Rat Snakes, Bogertophis and Senticolis. I also have a few Gray-banded Kingsnakes. I had written that I am looking for a caging system that can provide UV lighting. I know that UV lighting is not typically thought of as imperative for the care and successful breeding of Colubrid snakes, but I think natural lighting is important in a display cage to show off the beauty of the animals. I think I like hinged doors that open in a downward fashion. Ideally the door would be glass and the remainder of the cage would be a lightweight black PVC material.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Walter

Repti-Racks was the first company I thought of when you mentioned your color and door preferences. I would look there and plan on adding your own UV fixture.

I'm not sure what their black cages are made of. I think it might be 1/4" ABS.

If you're looking for something pre-made you might want to look at repti-racks. They make real nice lightweight cages for both arboreals and terrestrials. Good pricing and turn around times. Available with or without heat panels. You could easily modify them so you can add slimline fluorescent light fixtures.

Most rack systems like this use clear lucite for drop down doors. It's difficult to adhere hinges to glass doors, eventually the adhesives give up and your doors fall off.

This link will take you to their home page. They have a pretty good deal on 35"x 23" x 12" cages right now. Available in either black or white.
