Is my 4yr old corn snake blind?

TerranScout Nov 01, 2010 07:30 PM

He wouldn't kill live prey very well. So I've been feeding him frozen for about a year.

Now I'm starting to wonder by his behavior because he can barely strike frozen prey that I'm dangling in front of him.

Is there any sure fire way to test it. . . hes pretty stone cold when I faked punching him stopping my fist like 4 inches from his face.

I'm not sure if all snakes are that cool like that but it really makes me think he has no sight.

Thoughts?

How has his shed cycles been? Sometimes they will retain eye caps an over time they can build up causing sight problems. Just my thoughts.

Take him to a vet, about the only sure fire way to know for sure. An experienced snake vet can check for retained eye caps from past sheds, damage to optic nerve, etc.

Some snakes are not as head shy as others...but the fact he doesn't respond at all if you move your hand right up to his nose..makes me feel there could be issues with vision.

It is also best to feed frozen thawed, or fresh killed...less risk of the snake getting bitten, or worse.

I don't think hes retaining eye caps since I check his shedded skin and it usually has the eye caps included.

I guess I'll just take him to the vet. Its probably about time he got a checkup anyway. (never been before)

Thanks
