Breeding rodents

DiamondFlame10 Nov 02, 2010 12:32 PM

I know that there is a feeder forum but it doesn't get a whole lot of traffic.... I was thinking about starting to breed rodents... Not very many as I don't have much room for them... Probably 1.3 mice and 2.6 rats or so. I also only have 5 snakes to feed, and only one is on live mice. I was wondering what the best way to go about this was. I was thinking about buying tubs, cutting out the top and putting screening on it... It's cheap enough so I can have extras... Any suggestions?

Thanks

That's what I did. There are pros and cons to it. The pros are that it is cheap and easy, and if you don't need a ton of rats, you don't need to build any sort of shelving or anything for it. The cons are that if you do need a lot of rats, this method takes up a lot of space, it requires daily feeding and watering, and the tubs will suffer damage over time, usually to the lids. I actually want to replace mine in the near future with mortar tub racks.

Secure the screen to the lid using wire, not glue or zip ties, and keep in mind that while all brands of tubs may look similar, some crack when you try to cut them to put the screen in.

just a little of this and that???..

a 10 gallon tank works fine....20 longs for the rats....better would be a 40 breeder....

IF you want....a rat rack for the rats....maybe 4 bins....and a 10 gallon of mice and a 10 gallon for overflow...

all up to you....

I have 15 snakes to feed. I have:
1.1 Mice
1.3 Mice
1.2 ASFs
1.3 ASFs
1 50 gallon of male ASFs and female Mice
1 45 gallon of male Mice and female ASFs (this prevents unwanted breeding)

Each group in their own tub. I use cheap sweater boxes and, instead of using the plastic lids that break down so easy, I made wood and hardware cloth lids that lock on with cotter pins. I used a deeper tub for the ASFs so they can have a wheel (so they won't be tempted to chew out of the tubs). This has worked really well for me. Veritably swimming in rodents.

I actually sell off a lot of my smaller rodents to fellow kingsnake and hognose owners. I cull (freeze off) about half of every litter so the remaining babies grow faster and ultimately get much larger than if I were to leave them in and try for just a large number of rodents. I feed a mixture of super-cheap dog food as a protein supplement and a rodent block. I also offer corn and cheerios as treats (ok, so I baby them, sue me)

Why mice ?

You don't need any unless you need to feed baby corns.
But Balls take rat pup easily as start-up !

Because he has a Ball that is a mouse-only feeder. I swear those are hard to convert. I have a male that would starve to death before eating anything other than a stupid mouse.
