I have spent alot of time talking to my Fed Ex rep about this issue.
Per your contract you can only ship to commercially zoned addresses is what that legaleeze means. So the best bet is to ship to the customer's closest Fed Ex hub, which not only gets it there sooner it's also safer for the animal as it isn't in a truck for extended periods of time. Another option is their place of work.
As for ignoring the contract and shipping residential anyway...all I can say is we have seen repster and SYR taken away as options for shipping snakes and how that has impacted the community. Losing Fed Ex would be humongous loss for everyone in an even bigger way since it is our only option left.
With all the bad publicity already out impacting reptile legislation I think getting a label of snake people as "ignoring" contractual agreements with shipping companies and the potential ramifications if something "happened" when not following the contract is a good way to get our rights/opportunities taken away in several possible ways.
As a seller I think it's important to follow any contracts with other businesses which can affect the reptile community as a whole.
As a buyer I believe the same thing can be said, buying from someone who follows their contract (or making the trip to your local hub for pickup if it is in question) you are reinforcing the market you are getting into, ensuring those options will be available to you in the future, not endorsing something that could harm the market and limit your options.
Hope that helps
