Interspecies Breeding

LordChristensen Sep 26, 2003 10:39 AM

I know that in the Pit Viper world inter species breeding is often done. Such as Mojave to Diamondback and Eastern Diamondback to Western Diamondback. My question is "Is it possible to breed seperate species of cobras (or other elapids) such as the Naje haje with the Naje naje kaouthia(sp)? And if it is possible is there any place on the web that provides pictures for all to see?

This is a tricky question. Yes, it is possible. Documented, um, maybe somewhere i'm sure. As long as they are both Naja sp. they should be able to interbreed, though usually i would guess they are not inclined to do so. I read on bob clarks web page that he successfully had a Burmese python breed with a retic...so i don't think that Naja haje with naja naje is out of the question, haha...hope this helps.

For hyrbud species of pythons see my paper from the 1980's the first to have photos of these:
at:
http://www.smuggled.com/hybsna1.htm
and also for hybrid adders, this happens in the wild (2 locales) and in captivity, incl. between A. lancasteri and A. hawkei (neither of which were named or described by me), and a photo of that was on the cover of Monitor 10(2/3) published in 1999 and is seen online at:
http://www.smuggled.com/addtax2.htm
BUT ONLY if you scroll down the page and download the pdf version of the paper (5 mb)
all the best
