New Thayeri (first)

koogie Nov 03, 2010 06:47 PM

Hi,

This is my first king. I decided to go with a Thayeri. I liked him so much I am getting a female this Friday. Now I just want a room of them. He is such a great snake - eager eater, docile, never musk or tags me. I got him from Tom Corley, a nice guy and very helpful.

Just wait till you have to get the babies to eat! You'll have second thoughts then, but it's still worth it, HA HAAA! I love the fact that none look alike. That's why they call them the "Box of Chocolates Snake"! You never know what your gonna get?

They aren't any worse than cornsnakes when it comes to "getting them to eat"........

Quit calling your experiences the almighty truth about thayeri.....

I thought you did that? lol.

Look it's not just me. I recently talked to whole salers who buy snakes from breeders and they are very leery about buying baby Thayeri. It's not just me John. There are exceptions for every rule obviously.

Your first mistake was talking to a wholesaler......ha!

Because wholesalers are not set up to provide for thayeri.....They aren't the run of the mill getula that you can keep in your snake room without any heat....no wonder you had problem feeders......LOL Gotcha!

Yep there are exceptions to every rule.....Or there should be no rules.....
Some getula can be quite stubborn feeders too......And corns and BPs and Longnose and alterna......hehe

So your saying that people who buy thayeri should expect to have a more than usual set up and require cages with heat tape or other heat sources? I have Alterna and have bred them in the past with no heat. Are they much different than Thayeri?

By the way your right some Eastern kings are a pain in the arse too. Corns are a little different, because we have such a wide gene pool, some strains are picky eaters prefering lizards, and others are voracious eaters eating pinkies from the egg.

I say.....Alterna, Pyromelana, Zonata, Mexicana & Ruthveni require very similar set ups.......They are all higher elevation kings......Unlike common kings......

So you bred alterna with no heat.......Were the hatchlings hardy feeders? One way to "trigger" feeding is to let them know it is Summer....heat and humidity......Maybe your snake room is warm enough to do that since you close your a/c vents......

I'll say it again....The MOST stubborn neonates I ever had was a clutch of Holbrooki and a clutch of Cornsnakes.......I guess I got a bad strain from both.......But I also think I have the Mexican and Montane kings figured out........no matter what strain.....

I've heard Holbrooki can be a pain too! All the babies I've seen in New Orleans would eat Anoles though. Then later they would take pinkies.

It's all the same. I had some splendies that held out. Thayeri CAN be a problem, but don't have to be. That said, you could raise them just like low level snakes and they will produce, if all the stars and planets are in conjunction and in the House of Sagittarius...not! I have no more probs with them than any others, they all want lizards, it's hard wired into them, but I have to scent lots of species...sometimes. People in Florida do it all the time, eh, Mark?

Oh ya I have jumped - I plan on getting two more babies next year. These guys will move to bigger cages and I can't have empty cages around

a153fish Nov 04, 2010 06:36 AM

Very pretty! I like the head pattern. It looks like a forked tongue, lol.

The head pattern made my decision. Now I am so happy he is with us. He is so calm for a baby. I named him Atticus. Tomorrow the female arrives and I am so excited!

CFrazier Nov 04, 2010 10:26 AM

That is one beautiful animal. Congratulations.

tgcorley Nov 04, 2010 10:07 PM

Thanks for the kind words, Vicki. You'll have to post a picture of Atticus' future mate when she arrives!

Tom

koogie Nov 04, 2010 10:49 PM

Tom, I just love him. He is already a big part of the family
IDK if I'd ever breed them but it sure will be fun to have another one. Then of course when these two need bigger cages I'll need two more babies
Maybe I'll have the snake room I always wanted someday.
