Looks like that could be it, but it's shell is so misshapen. I was told it was a north american wood turtle from Michigan, a protected species, but I thought it had too much color. I will ask about care in the general forum. Thanks!

Yeah it loks a little mishapen but its not clemmys (glyptemys) insculpta (i have 12 of those), the North American Wood turtle.
It looks like R p manni to me but you can get other opinions.

There is a very nice care sheet on this species here

But basically you need to keep him warm 75 - 90F (higher on one end than the other, use a basking light), give him about half land-half water and at least 12 square feet of space.
Feed him mostly fruits some veggies and worms and insects, Provide at least five inches of soil to burrow in and keep the water clean.

And it perfectly legal to keep these guys in the states.

The mishapen shell is most likely due to improper diet. It is a central american would turtle though. No doubt about it. Very cool and very nice animal to have. Good luck with it and check out those caresheets. You want to sure you keep him on a good diet and make sure he gets calcium on his food. (you can even grate some cuddle bone onto his food or put some calcium carbonate.
