NO ADULT MONITOR PICS!?!?!?!??!

Chameleon2005 Sep 26, 2003 12:56 PM

Just a quick point to make here.

I have searched around these forums and i see very very few pictures of Adult Monitors, plenty of cute babies is there a reason for this?
Is No-one keeping these animals all there lives? or do they not have Cam`s? I hope its just the cam thing coz that`s really depressing if its under education!

Try: varanus.net
varanus.nl
and cybersalvator.com -just to name a few.

Oh yeah...QUIT YELLING AT PEOPLE!!! They might be inclined to want to help you out more if you were nicer.

With most of the people here being new to the hobby why would they have adult monitors?

With most of the people that keep monitors getting out of the hobby with in the first year or so. Why would they have adults?

Does that really suprise you?

With just a hair over 2 years in it myself I have a few well on their way to being adults. I posted pics of some adult flavi/argus crosses below.

Look at the picture thread. There were a bunch of pics of adults there.

The sad truth is most monitors do not live as long as they should in captivity. But before you start throwing stones about people's education/husbandry, you should consider that maybe perhaps maybe, there is much more to it than meets the eye.

OK sorry, I aint yelling just curious!

I`m not throwing stones about peoples husbandry etc. It deeply disturbs me how many animals, not just Reptiles that are sold through the pet trade without proper care or pre advice. Most rescue cases are people who truely believe they are doing the best for their Iguana`s by feeding them big mac`s. I DO NOT completely fault the owner for this, if they beleive the pet store from which they bought the animals advice, Why would they doubt it?

Any ways if anyone has any adult pic plz post them!

Thanks

Since you have identified a problem, a valid one may I add, what steps have you taken to be proactive?

Change the situation???????

Now there`s a mammoth task aint it?

I recently left my job in a pet store over such disputes!

I personally think some sort of major overhaul has to be done to prevent spontanious purchases of reptiles!

We have to realise that Reptiles will not tolerate the same amount of neglect as a hamster or a goldfish!

I would like to see the idea of some sort of application form for reptiles to prove that all the key points are known, and if they are not, then the person is fully explained these key points so that they are understood!
Having worked in a pet store I appreciate the time this would take and "inconvienence" the retailer. Any customer i have spoke to about this have fully agreed to this, as they also feel this would also help to break down the image of pet stores being money grabbers!

I can HONESTLY say that in my 4 years in a pet store that i refuse to sell ANY animals that I do not know much/anything about!(and all my Rep`s were C.B.B). When customers came in asking after a particular reptile "to order" if i had no experience/knowledge of the animal then i would suggest other stores that could help them!

I know of NO other store employee anywhere that could say that, but no doubt I will get abuse for saying that!

I could go on all day but I beleive that I HAVE made a difference to the Reptile trade. Not a BIG difference but a big effort for a tiny difference!

I wish, truly wish that Retailers take a good long look at themselves and make a change. I think its criminal the amount of Reptiles in my local rescue Centre, ok some people have good reasons for having to re-home but most are undereducated people and that problem starts and finishes with the retailers!

Just my opinion guys!

It's nice that you directed people in the right direction, never a bad thing. The truth is though, that most pet store owners could care less about the animals they sell. Its a business. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy money myself being a business owner myself. The problem lies in selling animals that will suffer in the consumers hands, and even more in the hands of the pet store people. They are selling little souls to make a buck and not never caring about their welfare. Sad, but there is a market. For example I go all the time to my nearest pet shop to by toys for my birds. Last time i went in and noticed they had stacked their newly acquired 3 bearded dragons from the "reptile show" on top of their gecko 10 gallon tank, cutting out its ventilation. Inside is the last poor gecko left from their last reptile show visit, with a missing tail. I told her what she was doing, so she put a small piece of cardboard to.....let air in. Go figure. It's just the way things work

I'd take a pic of mine, but it would come out all blurry. Timors aren't the sit-still photogenic type. He's about 6 years old, although I've only had him for 2. (I had enough experience to acknowledge my limitations and buy a small species).

Peter: It's OK, I'll handle it. I read a book about something like this.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't NOTHING?

The throwaway attitude is disturbing. I do not disagree with that. But I think it is a mistake to think that some caresheet will really improve the lives of very many if any monitors.

Im not sure if I have said so yet, but Im very sorry for your loss. Did she ever reproduce for you?

Sincerely,
Michelle

No, but she did all she could do, I just ran out of time learning with her.

I believe she cycled 4 times this year, twice resulted in infertile clutches, twice were absorbed, last absorbtion was too much for her to take.

Thanks,
