Fruit fly expertise needed.

wcumagic Sep 26, 2003 12:57 PM

Got ahold of the fruit fly people, and I'll be getting some early next week. Guess I'll be pillaging the local forest for termites in the dark tonight. Anyway, I've had gruit flies before, but it was just a little dinky culture so I dont have any real experience with them.

How do you get them out without killing them? I have this problem with little crickets too. Half end up as jelly on my fingers when I try to get just a few. Seems like flies would be even more delicate. Also, if I got one bit 32 oz culture and some extra medium, could I indefinately supply flys to my frogs, and if not, what would I have to do for this? I cant find a fly caresheet anywhere (havent stared extensively looking for one, but didnt see one in the 15 minutes or so of looking I did), so how do you really take care of them? they eat the medium, I keep them room temperature, and they breed. Is that it, or is there more? How many will it produce?

Here are some good links for FF info. You will need to make a couple of cultures a week to keep up, and be consistant so you do not run out of food.

Here are some sites with a lot of info on ff's, and darts:
