Difference in flexwatt wattage

SnakeJunkie77 Nov 10, 2010 01:04 AM

im looking to build my first rack instead of buying one already built. I will be keeping baby balls to juvi balls in it. Is there a big difference in the 3" 6 watt and the 3" 10 watt? Is one more recommended more than the other. I will be using a thermostat with it. Thanks!

Yes there is a very big difference. The 6 watt will get maybe 110-120degrees max. unless it is compressed, and the 10watt will get up to 150 degrees surface temp. You could probably use the 10watt for back heat, but do not use it for belly heat.

Have you tested the flexwatt to get these tempratures? Is it published somewhere? I have been looking for what the max temprature that different widths and wattages would get to but cannot find it.

I have not tested this info. but I have used both 6watt and 10 watt, and 10 watt does get very hot to the touch. I heard several years ago, that Jeremy Stone had some very very bad luck with 10watt, it melted his tubs and killed some of the first Hypo Motleys. Not sure though.

This rack is going to house baby and yearlings 6qt sterilite tubs.

I use 11" 20watt for all of my shoebox (6qt), and keep all of my "hotspots" at 91-92 (the room is 80) with no problem.
