orchidspider Nov 10, 2010 12:18 PM

Been re-reading Bartlet's Rat Snakes book and been admiring the Mexican form of the Bairds in there with a gray head and orange body Is anyone working with them? if so do you have pics you can share? Any info would be great. I don't have room for them at the moment, but they seem really cool!!! Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

Don't keep them anymore, but they're great somewhat skiddish snakes that need a lot of room and lots of food. IMO, they would do much better in a realistic "rock wall" vivarium than sitting on aspen all the time -- they're just really active for ratsnakes, and they would love to climb if given the chance. They never bite out of aggression, in my experience.

I have a friend with a pair who might be producing in 2011. PM me if you are interested.

I got a pair from Craig Trumbower at the Daytona show. He had a 2-3 year old on display that was awesome looking and I couldn't resist. They are neat snakes. The male, who is a better feeder than the female, is already getting a nice yellowish wash. Pattern is still bold, of course, but you can definitely see the yellow coming in.

Those came from my big girl and her late husband. I was able to get another male back from Craig, and also acquired a pair from the Ft. Worth Zoo stock. So now I'll be able to have both locales and a mix of the 2. I certainly agree with Dusty, they need a large cage and would love the ability to climb. One of the best snakes in my collection, never a fuss at feeding time, never been bitten, and as they get older they get real mellow!

These new acquisitions should make everyone happy, Big Momma is a prolific breeder, let's hope the new male can do the deed!
