Seeing that picture of "doug" chewing on the hand brings up the question. What methods do you guys use to get those bad chewers to disconnect. I've had a few over the years that were especially bad about chewing. I usually wind up holding them under running water for a bit and they turn loose. Any other techniques?

A q-tip dipped in rum works wonders.

No kidding! I wouldn't have thought of that. I haven't had any cal kings for a while, but just got a few again. Out of the group of 6, one of them always latches on. Not too bad while they're small!

Thanks John and everyone else too. I see a trend. A legitimate reason to keep alcohol in the snake room!

Now that I think about it, it can be useful for disinfecting the bite if you do have one, like in the old cowboy movies. Also for disinfectant on minor surgeries on snakes, and perhaps a whole host of other uses.

i just let colubrids chew im pretty thick skinned so its kind of humorous for me to just let them be, now for large boids head held under water works well.

That is one case where size does make a difference! I have in the past sat on the couch and watched TV with a king snake attached to my hand to see how long it would take for him to let loose. After an hour still no sign of letting loose on his own.

Distilled spirits work well whether rum, vodka, tequila. Wine also works. My preference is hydorgen pyroxide. It's non toxic unlike rubbing alcohol and it tends to make snakes become non chewers. I learned this from keeping monitors. You think big snake bites hurt? Hah.

Are snakes smart enough to pick a soft spot to bite?
I once caught a fair sized zonata and not having an empty bag I had it in my hand as I headed back to camp. It was nosing around for about 10 minutes and then finding a soft spot in the web btween my fingers it latched on and wasn't about to let go. It was like it knew what the most painful spot would be.

Sounds about right. I was holding a Fl. King I had years ago in one hand and messing around with something in his cage with the other when I realized something felt funny. When I looked aat my hand I realized he was in the process of swallowing my finger! Pretty funny. Ahh, that brings back memories. He was missing part of his tail and had a severe scar from a burn. Apparently got caught in a canefield fire. Anyway I named him Pegleg. Had him for a long time.
