Wild Caught Cal kings- morphs and normal

RossCA Nov 10, 2010 04:41 PM

Desert phase from Anza Borrego in San Diego County. 2nd one had exceptional wide bands for the area. We call them 60/40's.

Here is my favorite Cal king find. Hypomelanistic from Riverside Co. I've only heard of one other being found like this.

Here she is as a juvenile.

Some normal banded Cal kings from LA Co.

This one was pretty light but I wouldn't call it hypo.

Thin banded.

Long Beach Hypermelanistic kingsnakes.

Included with this one is the belly shot. The bellies for the most part have not been dark like this on the wild caught's I've seen.

A Newport-Long Beach morph but this one doesn't fall under "typical". A typical NP-LB morph would have a stripe down its back. This one is mixed up with what we call "scrambled bands", dots, and wide stripes. This is an old adult.

Here is my coolest find in LA County. A Newport-Long Beach Scrambled banded morph. This is actually a Newport but for some reason on rare occasion they come out with aberrant bands instead of a stripe. Only 2 like this have been documented in recent years from the wild.

Now here is another extremely rare morph only found in LA Co. Don Huffman is the only man to find these "Whittier morphs" with an aberrant pattern. Hubbs named them the "Striped Mud Morph". This individual is an F1 given to me by Don. Two other morphs very similar are found in Northern CA and Southern Baja, actually I think they are the same gene but this is the rarest one in the wild. I feel extremely lucky to have this snake. OK that is it. Hope you all enjoyed.

Ross, that was one of the nicest photo series Ive seen posted in a while on Kingsnake! Thanks so much for sharing your pics and photo memories- I love my pair of Costal Cals and your pics along with Hubb's book make me glad I have kept them- both my hypo male and normal coastal banded female.

Ross,
Great, awesome post. This is exactly the reason I am stricly a locality specific enthusiast of getula. Fascinating locality variation.
I was very fortunate to have met a collector who lived in Riverside county in the late 1970's. We became acquainted through one of the California Herp societies.
Some of my fondest memories from my early years of starting out in the hobby were of the locality kings and rosy boas he sent me.
Thanks for posting and bringing back some very fond memories.
