mercury vapor bulbs

tomcovert Nov 14, 2010 04:08 PM

I was wondering if there was a difference in the 160 watt Phillips mercury vapor bulbs and zoo med power sun 160 watt reptile basking mercury vapor bulbs other than one costing $15 and one costing $60. I was wondering if there is a uvb or uva difference or if other herpers use the cheaper ones with good results?

Unless it is made specifically for reptiles it will have filters to stop the UVb. It is to make them safe for human use. Otherwise you could get tan inside, and possibly melanoma. So no they don't work for reptiles

I did some research and they admitt uva and uvc but i didnt say anything about uvb. Also they have warnings of not to have prolonged exsposure to eyes or skin due uv radation even though they have filters. I think i will stay with the power sun then, but i guess its always worth looking for new ways to give your animals quality products but save a few bucks in the prosess.
