Licorice (White-Sided) Rat Questions

terrylove Nov 15, 2010 05:32 PM

I like the looks of these snakes and was wondering if- where the pattern shows on the back- is there a patternless, all-black version? Essentially, it would be a white snake with a black stripe down it's back. Does this exist and/or what genetic cocktail would it entail?

I've never seen one like that. One could selective breed the white side trait into darker black rat snake stock to achieve that effect. The white sided trait does seem to wash out the remnant color/pattern, so it may not be possible to produce a whiteside with a solid black stripe down the back.

Okay. I don't have any experience with the morph (yet) but I think it would be something fun to play around with. I wonder if there's an opposite gene out there that reverses the effect to maintain the normal side color but wash out the top. So a white-topped black rat! Haha. That would be neat.

......they sort of exist.....some have a very broken up pattern on top and some have a less broken pattern...there are a few with almost full black stripes....the more they were bred the more broken it seems they became....

the origional female licorice was pretty dark on top with white sides...she was a very nice animal....she is gone now....

....good luck...select the best and inbreed ....

Okay, thanks for the tips. I'll be on the lookout for quality animals.
