Brumation with Cali Kings

ariaha Nov 17, 2010 11:07 AM

This will be my first time attempting to breed my cali pair and I am wondering about brumating them. I have done some looking around and have gotten various answers- yes you need to, no you don't, feed them through the winter, don't, etc. Would anyone have some first hand experience to share about brumation and feeding, or a creditable website to go to? Also- how does one go about lowering a temp in an apartment where the room temp is going to stay around 70 degrees?
Thank-you!

On cooling the snakes in a warm apartment, get a wine cooler. Look on Craig's List for used ones.

Have yet to breed my snakes so cannot input any first hand experience there. The common consensus is that the males need a period of low temperatures for sperm viability.

You can cool them together in a single cage - they bond this way. Place them together once they have cooled down some, watch to see if they are OK.

One way is to use a large enclosure/box/whatever, place a heat pad all the way on one end, and leave the rest cool. On the floor is ideal if the room temp is 70 deg, because usually the floor is cooler depending on the material of the floor.

Snakes will choose what they want.

IMO 70 deg is not cool enough. Although kings use all temps in their preferred range, they seem to like to warm up above 75 deg and cool off below 70 deg. That 70-75 deg is not the best place to sit for extended periods. That is why I suggest the heater on and let the snakes decide. Hopefully the mass of the floor will pull heat away from the cage, making it cooler than 70 deg.
