So are they called Who-Deenees then? Is that how you pronounce their scientific name?

ain't it...GETULA....now???.......or GET-TOOLA-A???

DMong Nov 17, 2010 07:56 PM

The name is derived from the ancient "Getulians".

It refers to the Getulian people of Morocco, whose tribal insignia resembles the chain-like pattern of the kingsnakes of the eastern U.S.A. (Pyron & Burbrink).

DMong Nov 17, 2010 08:30 PM

Most people don't have the fist clue as to how ANY of the scientific names were derived, or what they mean at all.

Even the name "rhombomaculata" quite literally means...the angled, irregular rhomboid-shaped spot pattern on the dorsum.

Rhombo(rhomboid) = irregular shaped spots

maculata = pertaining to the top of the back

And of course, the subspecific name "woodini" refers to the last name "Woodin" of the person it was named after.

Same with Dr. Helen Gaige, for the Black milksnake(gaigeae)

Roger Conant (L. t. conanti)

Hobart Smith (L.t. smithi).....

Elaphe quatrolineata (Four-lined snake) = Buckskin, with four longitudinal lines(stripes)

South Florida Mole king (occipitolineata) meaning line(stripe) behind the eye(occipitals) pertaining to the eye.

Anyway, as you certainly know, they didn't just make these names up out of the clear blue sky. They all mean something very specific. I have always been very interested in what the heck many of them mean, and over the course of many years, I made sure I found out what many of them meant.

.and we aren't making fun of anybody that cannot or does not say Latin names or doesn't know how to say them....most snake people now know what a ball morph is worth...buy it for less and sell it for more and are happy doing that all day long....(and if they make me money I don't care if they don't know snakes)LOL...

....

the only name without a menaing I can think of is Morelia....I think it said it had no real meaning....(Morelia....carpet pythons...)////

DMong Nov 18, 2010 07:38 PM

More - elia = money.......more-money!

HAHAAA!!,......just kiddin'!!

I don't know what that one means..LMAO!!

Hello JY,

Thanks for the help with pronouncing the names I really appreciate it.

My father purchased a 2010 pair of Pueblan Milksnakes for my me and my twin brother about a month and a half ago.

This weekend he got us pair Tarahumara Kingsnakes. We have been feeding the Pueblans a pinky every 3 days so that we can grow them big in a couple of years. Hopefully they will be ready to breed by 2012. The Tarahumaras are blue so we are not going to feed them or bother them until after they shed.

We are just new into the snake community and joined a herp club out here in Vegas so we can learn more. Until now though we really wanted to know how to pronounce the scientific names properly. Thank you for helping us with that.

So now we have 1.1 2010 Pueblans and 1.1 2010 Tarahumara and plenty of pinkies to feed them all for a couple of months.

We also have 20 Leopard Geckos of all different color patterns and morphs that we have been breeding for a couple of years.

Justin

we all have owned too many milks/kings ....wait...not enough???......depends on time ....we never have enough time....

...good luck.....have fun......!

The name "thayeri" originates from the snake being named after Dr. Frank Thayer of New Mexico.
