Maintenance during Brumation?

arkanis Nov 18, 2010 11:25 AM

So I am brumating my subadult z in a wine refrigerator (not cold enough in los angeles for garage brumation). She has been in there since Nov 1 and is being kept at 53 degrees... in the enclosure within the wine fridge she has aspen substrate, water bowl, coco hide, small bit of fake foliage.... I check/replace her water every couple of days -- also to give her some air.

Is there any way she can become too dry during brumation? Does she ever need to be sprayed or soaked or anything?!

Is there anything else is should do? Geez.... brumation is boring... kind of like watching paint dry, lol

I know the feeling! Mine have only been in for 2-3 weeks and I'm already bored I'm going to give it through christmas though. Hopefully 2 months or so is long enough.

I always have plenty of neonites that I don't brumate so as to keep them growing to reach maturity quicker. So I stay busy all year round. I almost wish I did get a break, lol.

Breeding colonies of mice do not brumate. It would be nice if they did. But I like to keep the colony going all year even though the consumption falls off over winter. Then I always have live pinks for my babies, who don't brumate.

You can give her a moist sphagnum moss hide.

Some of mine in their moss hide during brumation. Use orchid moss, or long fibered moss, available at garden centers in the orchid growing section.

Yes, brumation is boring! I have my lizards, toads, cats, rats and mice to entertain me during the off season.

Actually watching paint dry is far more entertaining.

There is more to time than meets the eye! LOL!

A thing you can do to make time "go fast" is engage in some extremely pleasurable activity, like love making or a great massage.

To make time "go slow" sit on a hot stove.

I live in Los Angeles. The humidity in Winter gets rather low as you know, except during rains. Z's dry out. So make sure yours has access to moderate humidity in some form. The moist moss box suggested by the other poster is one good way.

Z's and dehydration is not a good combo. A water bowl does not always guarantee proper hydration. And remember that wine coolers are designed to be cool and dry inside. So that more than anything is what you need to check on.

Hey thanks everyone... i placed the moss hide in there with her...

It all sounds just fine, but don't necessarily need to change the water every few days. Air exchange IS good, and just opening the door for a few moments allowing for fresh air to waft in is more than adequate.
